Three in one afternoon

Investigations are continuing into the cause of an “undetermined”firenear Gunnedah earlier this week.

Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews from Gunnedah and Kelvin responded to the Rangariblaze and the firewas quickly contained.

Gunnedah policeInspector Michael Wurth said on Wednesday, theywereinvestigatingreports a vehicle was seen in the areabutat this stage, the fire wasnotsuspicious.

“The cause is undetermined,” InspectorWurth said.

“There was nothing to indicatean accelerant.”

It was a busy afternoon for local RFS crews who foughttwo more fires in the region in a matter of hours.

One started at Cushan’s Reserve on Old Tamworth Rd about 3.30pm which reignited about 11.30am Wednesday.

Investigations continue into the cause of that fire, but early indications are the fire might have started from an escaped camp fire.

It was one of a number of fires started in that area recently which RFS Liverpool Range Zone acting manager Tim Butcher believed had similar ignitions.

“We think it’s people fishing by the river,” Mr Butcher said.

“Investigations are ongoing.”

A third fire at Mt Nombi, 15 kilometres south-west of Mullaley, was also brought under control that afternoon with assistance fromCoonabarabran RFS crews.That fire had reportedly burnt out 107 hectares.

The run of call-outs signalled a busy and potentially dangerous period for fires in the region this week.

Our Northern Slopes fire danger rating for Thursday was “very high” and one of only three regionsin the state to be rated as such.

RFS advisedresidentsreview their bush fire survival planwithfamily,stayinformed and monitor conditions andbe ready to act if necessary, during this fire danger period.

Mr Butcher said if necessary, extra RFS staff would be called on to respond to fires in our region.

“We have a heightened sense of preparedness,” he said.

“We’re standing by.

“Where in winter we might send one truck, for fires now we’re more likely to send multiple trucks.”

RFS also advisedlocal residents if theysee an unattended fire, to immediately phone 000.
