Redhead pair ready for final push

Redhead’s Isak Costello and Daniel Collins are within reach of securing places in the national ironman series final and ending a seven-year drought for the region this weekend.

Collins is 12thand Costello 16thoverall on the Summer of Surf series heading to the sixth and final round at Surfers Paradise on Friday and Saturday.

The top fivefrom the Summer of Surf who have not already cemented their place in the 40-man, three-round national series at Cronulla will gain a start at the February 24-26 finale.

Collins sits fourth and Costello sixth in the race for those places, giving the Hunter a strong chance of qualifying a starter for the first time since Belmont Swansea’s Josh Blair in 2010.

Costello said he needed to improve on his third-best finish of 16that Surfers Paradise to give himself a chance of qualifying for the finaland was confident after a personal-best of sixth at last weekend’s Manly Carnival ironman on the weekend.

“I’ve been getting better as the series has gone on,” Costello said.“They’ve changed the Nutri-Grain series format this year but it’s still a prestigious event and making it has been one of my goals for a while now.”

Collins, who has two top-10 finishes,said he was “in a pretty good spot” but was keen to guarantee his start at what would be “the most hotly contested round”.
