Clubs gottheir wish to reduce the season from 18 games when the fixture was released on Wednesday.

The season will start on April 8 before the league takes a break for Easter the following week.

Tatyoon will unfurl its senior flag when it hosts Ararat Eagles in round one before it faces Wickliffe-Lake Bolac in a grand final rematch in round two.

Ararat Eagles will travel to Great Western in round three in the hopes of repeating theireffort where they won their first game in more than two years in round 14.

The mid-season bye is scheduled for between round 11 and 12 on July 8.

The league will also take a break from normal schedules for the interleague fixtures that are on May 13.

League board member David Wade said the earlier interleague fixture forced the league to start before Easter to allow players to play four games beforehand.

“If we started after easter, it would have been a lot harder to pick the interleague squad from two games.”

The finals will kick off with the qualifying final set forAugust 26.

Clubs were hoping for a 16-game season but the league settled on 17 games.

Wade said he got a letter from one of the clubs asking that we reduce the amount of games during the season.

“It was sent after the 2016 season had finished so we had a club forum in November to discuss it,” he said.

“We gave them the option of a 16-game or an 18-game season and many wanted 16.

“The league discussed that then gave them a 17-game option and some preferred that.

“The board did not want to reduce the season by too many games though.”

Because of the uneven amount of games, some teams will get an extra home game during the season.

Wade said he hopes the schedulewill even out for all teams over the long term.

“I did not set out to give any particular clubs eight or nine games,” he said.

“If we remain at 17 games next year, then we can hopefully reverse it so whoever misses out this year gets the extra game next year.

“It has been a bit of a contentious point with some clubs but we cannot please everyone when they all want something different.”

The league’s grand final is scheduled forSeptember 16, the week before the Wimmera Football League grand final.
