Lithgow’s Angus Clues has dominated the competition winning five gold medals at the recentAthletics NSWCountry Championships.

The event was held in Dubbo for the first time on the new synthetic track between January 19-21.

Clues competed in the under 12 age group however he only turned 11 on January 11 of this year.

His five gold medals came in the100 metres, 200 metres, long jump, discus and shot put.

In another great achievement, Clues also broke the discus record for 11 year olds. He threw a distance of30.95m to beat the previous mark of 30.56m.

Clues was pleased with his efforts in the event but was not expecting to break the record.

“I was surprised…I’ve been practicing nearly every day to get up to stuff like that,” Clues said.

The competition also forced Clues tothrow a 3kg shot put which he had never done before. His last throw sailed for9.18m and secured the winning distance.

His other results included leaping 3.86m in the long jump, 14.95 seconds in the 100m with a -3.2m/s headwind and 31.03 seconds in the 200m.

Clues’ mother,Sally-Anne was on the edge of her seat when it looked like Angus could sweep thegold in all his events.

“When he got to the fourth one and we knew he was in five events we thought it would be really nice if he could get the fifth one,” said Mrs Clues.

“So it was a bit of a nervous wait for that one and he came through with the goods.”

Clues has clearly shown he is an all-round athlete but also competes in swimming and Rugby League as a fullback. He is also looking forward to playing cricket next season.

Athletics still remains his favourite sport due to the variety that it offers. He saidhe will look to add a few more events under his belt in the future including hammer-throw and javelin.

Mrs Clues was once a keen sportsperson herself and would love her son to grab every opportunity he can.

“Yeah, it’s great because I’d like him to have more chances than I had.

“I didn’t have many opportunities, Angus is an only child whereas I came from a bigger family so mum and dad couldn’t do the things that we do with Angus.

“We can travel a lot with him and take him to training, that’s rewarding to be able to do that with him.”
