The proposed design will more than double the site’s courts andinclude an indoor cricket court, significantly boosting existing and new leagues, and provide space for private functions.

QPRC’s manager of community business Daniel Fulton said it wouldallow the centre to capitalise on popular social sports leagues on both sidesof the border.

“A lot of what we’re trying to do is get ready for the growth of Googong and South Tralee,” Mr Fulton said.

“It’s going to give us a greater scale and capacity just from a business point of view because these sorts of sports centres need a highnumber of participants and turnover of programs to be able to generate a business model that will work.”

The federal government announced it would provide $2.25 million to help pay for the extension, with the council set to pay for the remaining $2.25 million.

Mr Fulton said the centre wouldexpand all leagues and bring back the much-lovedindoor cricket to the area.

“It allows us to expand our futsal, netball, volleyball, floorball leagues, but also have more than one birthday party at a time, and bigger courts so we can host state carnivals which we weren’t able to do before,” he said.

The council administrator Tim Overall said the proposed design willbe on public exhibition in the coming days.

“The extension of the facility will allow for a greater diversity of programs and services and would allow the centre the scale and capacity to deliver a sustainable business model,” Mr Overall said.

“A vibrant and active Queanbeyan-Palerang is one of the key strategic directions of council,” he said.

Meanwhile, the proposed decade-long transformation of the CBD will also go on exhibition soon with the QPRC to make a formal announcement in the coming week.
