Back in the newsroom on a big news week

Last week I returned to my desk as the north-west Sydney editor after a year offdedicated to my other full-time job: being a mum of two.

It’s been a few years since I’ve had a column so, for those who aren’t familar with me, I have been a journalist with Fairfax community newspapers for 20 years, 10 of those as an editor across south west and western Sydney.

Before I left Iwas the sole editorof five community newspapers; namely St Marys-Mt DruittStar, Hills News, Rouse Hill Courier, Blacktown Sun and Parramatta Sun.

I returned on one of my favourite news weeks of the year: Australia Day Honours.

I am always blown away by the number of people who live in our area –many of who I have never heard of before – achieving the most amazing things. My reporters always come back “high” after an hour with these people.

This week is also a big week for many of our readers:I want to give a shout-out to all the parents this week whosent their little ones to big school for the first time. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve done it before, it’s still tough. Also to those mums of not-so-little-ones who starthigh schoolthis week –the struggle is real.

I amstruggling to come to terms with the fact that this week my daughter turns one. I have no idea where the time has gone. I am even more disappointedthat my year off only ended a week ago and it’s already ablur.

I feel slightly ripped off and at the same time, that maybe I didn’t appreciate it enough. But then I remember I was the mum of a newborn and heavily sleep deprived. So it was probably a genuine blur much of the time.

I did enjoyit so much more than my year off with my son seven years ago. As all mums with more than one child can relate, you’realways so much relaxed the second time around (depending on the child of course).

I’d like to thank my replacement, Keiasha Naidoo, who was literally thrown in the deep end on my departure.

I left when the company was enteringa tumultuous change and Keiasha had to leada group of reportersshe didn’t know through a complete overhaul of how we deliver our papers, both in print and online. I thank her for looking after my “babies” in my absence.
