The ghastly sight wasfound by the animal’sowner, Robert and he said the stag was worth between $5000 to $10,000.

The Bellingen Shire Courier-Sun understands the animal was shot with a high powered rifle and the antlers, and head, taken in order to display on a mount.

Speaking on behalf of Robert, Thora local Darcey Browning said the attack was nothing short of “brazen” and required at least two or three strong men to succeed.

“It was one of the many deers running around the paddock,” Darcey said.

“They are enclosed in a two-metre high mesh fence adjacent to the Darwood Fire Shed.

“Whoever did this was nothing short of brazen –they climbed the fence and 40 metresin removed the head from the stag and then carried it back over the fence.

“That requires a few men …nothing like this has ever happened here before.”

The ranger and police were called to investigate and Darcey said a large domestic dog was either left at the scene or strolled a fair few kilometres to check out the carcass.

“Council’s ranger was called to impound the dog, seemingly lost and wandering in the vicinity,” he said.

“It was microchipped …but I won’t speculate on the owner.”

“The only reasonable explanation I can think of, is this was done for a taxidermist to preserve the deer’s head.

“I know the owner said he wouldcontact those in the profession to see what turns up on their doorstep.

“If mounted, the animal’s head isworth thousands of dollars”.
